For the last two months, the ELL students at Hall have been exploring dragons in the ELL classroom. They have learned about the differences between imaginary animals, like the dragon, and real animals, like their pets, animals in the zoo, and even themselves.
One of the things that really sparked the imagination of the students was the excellent movie produced by Animal Planet called Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real. Their goal was to show, through scientific fact, how it might have been possible for dragons to have existed. It was fun and we learned lots of science along the way.
They also looked at many different images from around the world of dragons produced by many different cultures: dragons with and without wings, dragons that are like snakes, and dragons that are made up of body parts belonging to other animals (such as a lion head and a horse body, with claws).
Writing and reading their own stories allowed the students to use their own imagination to the fullest. In the editing process each child was able to listen to their story and see if they needed to make any grammatical or stylistic corrections.
Now it’s your turn to read and listen to these amazing stories as you look the students’ illustrations.
