Reading Hebrew e-mail

Reading Hebrew e-mail that you receive from another Mac is usually no problem. It becomes trickier when you receive a message from a Windows or Unix computer. You will probably need to take at least some of these steps. Play with it until it works for you.

blah

You may need to click the "blah, blah" button so that you see headers. Unless you can read it, you will need to ask the people that send you mail not to send you mail formatted as HTML. Usually HTML mail is sent out as "iso-8859-1" which forces the font to use accented European letters instead of Hebrew.

pencil

Unless the Hebrew appears instead of accented European letters, you will need to change the font. Click on the pencil to allow changes to the text. Then pull down under "edit" to "select all" or just select the text that appears to be Hebrew.

Change the font to one of your installed Hebrew fonts. If the Hebrew is now reversed, you can download the font New York with Hebrew Block which will allow you to see the Hebrew text in the opposite order.

Next you will need to change the transliteration to "ISO Hebrew--->MacHebrew". If you want this to be your default, so that you do not have to change it with every Hebrew message, hold down the "option" key when going from "message" -->"change" --->"transliteration"---->"MacHebrew<---ISO Hebrew".

Hopefully, you will now be able to read your Hebrew messages. If you discover an easier way to do this, please write to me!
